General Convention 2018

The 79th General Convention of The Episcopal Church will meet July 5-13 in Austin, Texas. The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Park is participating in the GC for the first time as an elected member of the diocesan deputation, and will serve in two capacities: as the first alternate for the clergy deputation and as a legislative aid for the Committee on the Prayer Book and Hymnal.

The General Convention meets every three years and considers all the legislation for the Episcopal Church. This Convention presently has over 200 new resolutions to consider, along with re-consideration of legislation from prior Conventions. The Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip, will also be attending as a deputy. This will be his tenth General Convention! Sam describes General Convention as part county fair (everything Episcopal will have a booth), part family reunion (seeing friends and former classmates from all around the country), and part state legislature, strictly adhering to Robert’s Rules of Order and working from early each morning until late into the night.

There are almost 900 registered participants that will serve in the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies. But, considering the press coverage and vendors along with non-registered participants, the expected gathering is 10,000.

You will be able to follow the coverage of the Convention at the website for General Convention: A summary of Convention highlights, including legislation of particular interest to Grace, will be presented in a forum in the Fall.
