The parish office will be closed Monday, July 4 for the Independence Day holiday. The office will also be closed July 5 & 6, as the parish staff will be on retreat at Camp Mikell.
The 12:10 PM service on Wednesday, July 6 will be Noonday Prayer instead of a Eucharist.
Grace adults gather monthly to watch and discuss movies addressing a wide variety of subjects. A very casual occasion, participants often bring a little food and drink to share, and the popcorn is always plentiful. Join us at 7:00 PM on Friday, July 8.
Lay Reader Training
Current lay readers are encouraged to attend a training session to discuss the ins and outs of scripture reading in church. Come brush up on diction, intonation, and punctuation from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM on Saturday, July 9 in the nave. Parishioners interested in becoming lay readers are also invited. Please let Isabel Smiley Lewis know you will attend.
Handicapped Parking at Grace
Parishioners with disabilities are invited to make use of parking spots in the lot at the corner of Brenau Ave. and Boulevard. The 4 handicapped parking spaces next to the kitchen are reserved for official permit holders only. Please display your temporary or permanent disabled parking placards when parking in these spaces.
Official permits are NOT required in order to park in the 5 handicapped marked spaces facing the preschool wing. These spaces are used by preschool teachers during school hours. At other times they are available to any parishioner whose permanent or temporary needs require more accessible parking spaces.
Fertile Ground to Grow Your Faith
Like the mustard seed, we need fertile soil to grow. Education for Ministry (EfM) is like that fertile soil and we are the mustard seeds. Learning about the Old and New testaments, church history, and discovering theology is the light shining on the soil, warming it so the seed will sprout.
Bringing the light of what we learn to share in an intimate group setting each week allows for insights and growth – new affirmations and understandings – that can sustain and support us in our lives as Christians living day-to-day in the world. For the interested or just curious, visit efm.sewanee.edu. There is lots of helpful information, including sample lessons on the website.
A new EfM year will begin Thursday, September 1 at 6:30 PM in the Conference Room. You must register with Jenny Massey to attend EfM. Registrations are submitted mid-August. For more information or to sign up, contact Jenny Massey at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Hike Group Picnic at Vogel
The Grace Church Hike Group invites you to their annual picnic at Vogel State Park on Saturday, July 30. Our family friendly (wheel-chair accessible) picnic is the most popular event hosted by the Hike Group each year.
We have reserved picnic shelter #2 adjacent to Trahlyta Lake, starting at 10:00 AM. The grill will be ready to cook lunch around 1:00 PM. Bring your own meat and a side dish to share. Charcoal for the grill at lunch, a cooler of ice, plates, cups, napkins, and plastic utensils will be provided. We will have a couple kayaks and a canoe available for our use as well. Other things to consider bringing: chair, sunscreen, condiments, non-alcoholic beverages, towel, lifejacket, yard games, water shoes, etc. The day typically ends with a concert at 8:00 PM on the lake.
There will be opportunities for short hikes Friday afternoon and evening for those spending Friday night at Vogel in cabins or campsites. Fellowship around a campfire usually follows, or replaces, the concert on Saturday.
Entry to the park is $5 per vehicle. To help defray costs there is a charge of $3 person ($10 family maximum). Additional fees are charged by the park for boat rentals, mini golf, etc.
For more information or to sign up, contact Jeremy Landers by Sunday, July 24. If you won’t know till the last moment let Jeremy know you are a “maybe” so we can be sure to bring enough supplies. If you need transportation assistance, let Jeremy know by July 17 and we will try to arrange a ride for you with someone else going for the day.
