Christian Education This Sunday
Adults: On Sunday morning, May 8, from 9:30 -10:30 AM, Rabbi Biller is presenting photos and stories from his recent trip to Israel to visit his 18 year old son who is studying and volunteering there for a year. He will talk about our jointly planned trip to Israel in the fall of 2017. Cynthia, Stuart, and Rabbi Biller are collaborating in the planning of this trip, which they are imagining as a 5-7 day, intense, unusual, spiritual, and affordable journey. Come learn more at the presentation this Sunday.
Youth: All youth will meet together in the youth room on Sunday, May 8 to celebrate the end of the academic year.
Children: Children’s classes will not meet on May 8.
2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the Gainesville/Hall County Alliance for Literacy Spelling Bee and Grace Church will once again participate. This year’s team consists of Chaudron Gille, Leanne Edwards, Nancy Richardson (alternate), and Amy Bussler.
The “bee” is like no other, billing itself as a “Great Grown-Up, Good Time, Romp of a Spelling Bee!” It is a fast-paced event, with local teams, exciting skits and jokes, door prizes, as well as some serious competition among teams. Come on out to Brenau University’s Hosch Theatre to have a good time and help support a good cause on Tuesday, May 10, at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
Special Counseling Offering
On May 11 at 5:30 PM, our featured speakers will be representatives from the LINK Counseling Center. The Link Counseling Center is a nonprofit community counseling center serving the Atlanta area by providing quality, affordable, confidential counseling, psychotherapy, and support groups to all ages. Suicide prevention and aftercare is one of their three specialized programs. Persons as young as eighteen may attend.
Dinner is provided, please RSVP no later than Monday, May 9 to Brenda Morgan at 770-536-0126 or email@example.com.
It’s that time of year again! Our Parish Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, May 15 and we want you there! This is a wonderful opportunity to gather for fellowship, fun activities, and a delightful picnic on the Brenau lawn following our 10:00 AM combined worship service.
Delicious chicken and beverages will be provided. Please bring a dish to share with ten people according to the following assignment based on the first letter of your last name.
• A-H: hot side (ex. mac and cheese, baked beans, scalloped potatoes, green beans)
• I-N: cold side (ex. salads, fresh fruit, veggie tray)
• O-Z: dessert
We rotate the categories every year and would greatly appreciate you bringing a dish for the category that applies to you so that we end up with a tasty variety of food with plenty for everyone.
We Need YOU May 15!
As many of you know, it takes a “whole parish” to put on a picnic. If you are willing to help, please let us know as soon as possible:
Grace adults gather monthly to watch and discuss movies addressing a wide variety of subjects. A very casual occasion, participants often bring a little food and drink to share, and the popcorn is always plentiful. Join us in the youth room at 7:00 PM on May 13. All are invited!
Registration Kids in PreK – 5th grade are invited to join us for our Festival of Faith Vacation Bible School, June 20-24 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Priority registration for Grace Church parishioners and COG students ended May 1. Remaining spots will be filled in the order in which registrations are received. VBS 2016 is already a little over halfway full so don’t wait to register!

Supplies Needed Please begin collecting the following items for VBS: containers with lids (such as margarine tubs, etc.), old white sheets, foil gift wrap, gold braid/cord/ric rac, canning jar lids, origami or gift wrap paper, old Christmas cards with religious images, and stickers of flowers, birds, and assorted holiday scenes.
Safe Church Training
There will be a Safe Church Training opportunity offered at Grace Church on Saturday, May 14. Safeguarding God’s Children will be held from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, registration at 8:30 AM. Safeguarding God’s People will be held from 12:30 – 3:30 PM, registration at 12:00 PM. Lunch will be provided at 12:00 PM. Please register with Isabel Smiley Lewis by May 12.
All interested parishioners are welcome to attend either or both training sessions. Safeguarding God’s Children is required for vestry members and all persons who teach, supervise or assist with supervising children or youth ministries, programs or activities more often than occasionally. Safeguarding God’s People is required for church employees, vestry members, lay pastoral care ministers, spiritual directors, Eucharistic visitors, hospital visitors authorized by the church, leaders and facilitators of all adult programs and small group ministries and lay chaplains.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the annual picnic at Vogel Park hosted by the hike group! All parishioners are invited to attend on Saturday, July 30. Keep watch for details.
A Call to Travelers…
Our Children’s Formation Committee is looking for folks who have traveled to France, Australia, Germany, Brazil, England, Poland, Mexico, Japan, Russia, or Greece who would be willing to share some souvenirs or memories/stories of their travel with our children during Vacation Bible School. If interested, please contact Melanie Couch.
Listening Skills Seminar
You don’t need to be a pastor or counselor to come across those who need a listening ear. Listening is paramount in practicing presence for someone in a time of need. It sounds so easy, and for the most part, it is. However, there are some critical do’s and don’ts of which to be mindful in order to truly unlock the captive thoughts and feelings of a person in distress. The Community of Hope here at Grace is working on fine tuning this practice for ourselves and invite anyone interested, and especially those helping people in any capacity (outreach and pastoral care), to share in this time.
We will hold a brief Listening Skills Seminar on Sunday, May 22 at 12:00 PM in the parish hall. A light lunch is included so please email Laura Masterson by Saturday, May 21 if you plan to attend. We hope that you will prayerfully consider attending.
Listen with the ear of your heart. St. Benedict of Nursia
