Sunday School Starts This Week
Christian Formation classes for all ages start this Sunday, August 16. Visit our website for information about offerings for children, youth, and adults from 9:30–10:30 AM on Sundays.
Grief to Relief
Join us for a “Lunch ‘n Learn” following the second service on Sunday, August 16 in the Parish Hall! Our presenter will be Anne Keeton, certified grief educator and facilitator of the outstanding and effective program “Grief to Relief.” At the end of this session, interested persons will be able to enroll in the ten-week program that will commence the following week of August 23. Whether you are dealing with a loss that you experienced this year or decades ago, the program offers practical and respectful skills that meaningfully incorporate the loss into life. The cost for this 10-week program is $350 per person. Each weekly session covers several hours, and so the effective cost is minimal. If you feel this is something you need to do and find the cost a burden, please contact Fr. Stuart or Dr. Park about a scholarship. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
What’s Happening at Grace Church
Our annual “What’s Happening at Grace Church” has been emailed and can be found online. Hard copies are available at church. The booklet, published each fall, describes our church school year programs and events. Please read and keep this booklet as a reference throughout this academic year.
Our COG Preschool will begin their 2015-2016 school year on Monday, August 17. Welcome back to the administrators, teachers, and students!
Family Promise Needs Your Help
Our next Family Promise rotation is August 23-30. We are in need of Chinet dinner plates, Solo cups, sturdy plastic forks, and latex gloves. Please bring donations to the parish office by Friday, August 21.
Great Wednesdays at Grace
GWAG will kick off with an #eatpraytalk night on Wednesday, August 19! A catered buffet will be offered from 5:15-6:15, followed by an opportunity for fellowship from 6:15—7:00 PM. Make a meal reservation no later than 12:00 PM on Monday, August 17. Sign up online, at the information table, or call the church office. A nursery is available by reservation only for kids age 4 and under.
Liturgy and the Moral Imagination
We tell folks all the time that, if you want to understand what Episcopalians believe, come pray with us. We have a saying: Lex orandi, lex credendi, the way we pray shapes the way we believe. It is equally true that, if you want to see how Episcopalians are called to practice our faith in the world, come worship with us and see how our liturgy shapes our ethical embodiment. Our liturgy, then, shapes our moral imagination and is the primary lens through which we see our call to live and act in the world today. Eucharist, Baptism, Common Prayer, the way we understand the sacramental permeability in our world-this is what shapes our identity. Beginning Wednesday, August 19 at 7:00 PM in the Parish Hall, come share this space of reflection and embodiment in a special class: Liturgy and the Moral Imagination. Participants are encouraged to purchase a copy of Don Salier’s book Worship as Theology, which we will use as our guide in the conversations.
Join the Parish Choir
Our parish choir learns fine sacred choral literature and is dedicated to excellent leadership of our corporate worship at Grace. In addition to singing for the 10:45 service each Sunday, this group participates in many special liturgies and programs throughout the year such as Choral Evensongs, Christmas Eve prelude music, Holy Week and Easter services. A strong commitment to regular attendance is a must. The parish choir will gather for their first rehearsal of the 2015-2016 season at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, August 19. Participation is open to all. To learn more contact Director of Music/Organist David Burton-Brown.
The school supplies donated by Grace Church parishioners this year were delivered to Enota MI Academy. Thank you for your continued support of this annual outreach project.
Twice a year, all Grace Church members are invited to participate in a Foyer Group. Each group consists of six to eight adults who meet in one another’s homes for a meal over the course of approximately six months. Not only is participation in Foyers fun, but it also facilitates deeper relationships among Grace Church members. Sign-up for the next round of Foyers will continue until Sunday, September 6. If you are interested in joining, please sign up at the information table or online.
Artisans, musicians and hosts are needed to help with the first ever “Day of Self Expression” to be held at Grace on October 3! If you are interested, please contact Laura Rives.
Office Hours Change
As we head into the Fall ministry season, the staff has been hard at work on development, planning, and details. Our life together at Grace is indeed rich! In this vein, I have been more mindful of the staff’s commitment to their ministries here—and the need for additional support and encouragement. To that end, I’ve decided to make Fridays an office planning and development day. Our new office hours will be Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM—5:00 PM. Fridays will be closed to the general public, allowing the staff to have a day to catch up and look at the coming week. This will give us time to be even more thorough as we head into the Fall and beyond.
